Girls Run The World Programme, 24 October 2018

On 24th October 2018, the High Commission of Malaysia opened its doors to two students studying International Relations from Australian National University (ANU), as part of the Girls Run the World program.

Girls Run the World, the first of its kind, is an ACT based initiative designed to inspire and empower young women to explore new leadership frontiers and broaden relationships with the diplomatic community. The event was open to women aged 18-22 years to have a glimpse of the workings of a diplomatic mission in Canberra.  This year, 22 girls participated with attachments in 11 Embassies in Canberra.

The two participants assigned to Malawakil Canberra were Miss Ji Woo Ahn and Miss Sarah Conner. They had the opportunity to meet the High Commissioner Dato’ Sudha Devi KR Vasudevan, who shared her experiences and challenges in her career as a lady diplomat. The girls also met key officials and other staff at the High Commission who shared their nature of work and the significance of their roles.

The girls were then given the opportunity to immerse and engage in real-time practical activities, such as dealing with consular cases, analysing news articles and creating a presentation of Malaysian culture and way of life. To enhance their experience of the Malaysian hospitality, they were treated to Nasi lemak for lunch, which the girls absolutely enjoyed. They were also very excited to receive Malaysian mementos to remind them of their attachment at the High Commission.

The High Commission of Malaysia is pleased that we were able to give the students a hands-on experience on how a Mission functions, while at the same time impart to them the value and contribution that diplomats contribute in bringing peoples and countries together. Hopefully, their brief internship would also help in the empowerment of women and development of their leadership skills for the better good of society.

I personally appreciate the one to one time with officers and staff members, as I was able to engage in a personal level. I also had the honour of meeting the High Commissioner who inspired me by sharing her past experiences. This involvement allowed me to gain a better understanding of the relationship between Malaysia and Australia and would recommend this program to everyone in the future.”

-Ji Woo Ahn (2nd Year ANU Student)
